We all find ourselves feeling stuck at some point in our lives. It’s a debilitating feeling of not knowing who you are, what you truly want, or even if you did, how you can achieve it: straight up, feeling stuck- sucks!
But here’s the key about feeling stuck, and finding your way out.
Feeling stuck is not really about being stuck at all, it’s being in doubt. When we feel uncertain about our abilities, our looks, our intelligence, or our ability to achieve, we become like the ostrich with its head in the sand, turning the lights out on who we know ourselves to be and we feel stuck.
So, now that you know what the true culprit is, DOUBT, what do you do?
I find the best way out of doubt, or feeling stuck, is to take action toward what it is you want to accomplish. Sounds easy, and it is, the problem for most of us is that we are focused too far ahead on the outcome of our desires that we become paralyzed by the idea of it and this causes our brain, like a computer overload, to freeze. Because we are stuffing too big of a concept into our data base, our mind, to solve at one time, we cannot come up with any solution/action to get us closer to our goal, and we feel stuck.
It’s like having the goal to climb Mount Everest, if you only took in the whole mountain as your focus, you would never get on the mountain in the first place. You have to break your goal down into bite size pieces. What is the one thing you can do today to get closer to climbing the mountain –then -do that!
Allow yourself the space (time) to build each day towards your goal. Don’t look at the whole mountain, just commit to the climb, knowing if it’s what you want, you will get there, and then focus on taking one step at a time. If you discover it’s not what you want then maybe it’s just a smaller mount you desire, maybe it’s just being outdoors- your effort can never be lost if you learn something more about who you are. Living your life is never time wasted, unless you dismiss your own efforts –don’t.
There will still be days of doubt and even overwhelm, I call these feelings of breakdown – my breakthroughs, because if I just take a step back on those days, breath, give some time to myself where I can be alone and ask myself, what now? What do I need to do to help myself achieve my dream? And then the hard part….listen to the answer. I find that the craziest of ideas will come forth and if I take action, more than not, lead me one step closer to where I want to be. Better yet, is the feeling of taking action and knowing I’m not Stuck!
Take time to listen to the higher part of you that knows exactly where to go- for you. Take your head out of the sand and go be you, one step at a time. Let go of the relativities that we have been taught to put meaning on, like Time, Age, Sexual Identity, Race, Social Economics, and Education. Yes, these social attitudes exists, but don’t help yourself fit into others boxes by allowing them to define you – just-do you. One step at a time.
